The RMB has been in use since 1948 when the Communist party took control and the People's Bank of China was formed. It was originally produced in dominations ranging between 1 and 50,000. Until 1994, the Chinese Bank required that all foreign visitors to the country traded and used foreign exchange certificates however this is no longer required and now currency can be freely exchanged as can travelers checks and foreign credit cards.

Nearly all credit cards from around the world are accepted with brands such as Master Card, Federal Card, Visa, American Express, JCB and Diners Card being used frequently, however there are fewer ATMs that accept foreign credit cards than one might expect and you can't use them to by travel tickets either.
